Why You Should Always See a Doctor After a Car Crash

We write this blog to inform our readers of a concealed danger in car accidents. That is, “hidden” injuries, which may take some time to show up, but are very dangerous if not treated as soon as possible. The two major concealed injuries include:

  • Soft tissue injuries, which often do not show any visible signs. Therefore, soft tissue injuries are sometimes ignored as if they are not serious wounds. Whiplash is a common form of a soft tissue injury in car accidents. These injuries involving the muscles, tendons and ligaments, do not show up on X-ray scans. This means you should call the doctor and clearly describe the intense pain and discomfort you are feeling. Do not solely rely on external evidence of your injury; your body will tell you if something is wrong.
  • Concussions can range in severity. Additionally, they can range in how noticeable they are at the onset. Some concussions are immediately obvious. For instance, disorientation or loss of consciousness. Others can be so subtle as to not be recognizable. Yet, a few days can pass and you may realize that you have had headaches, difficulty remembering things, blurry vision, difficulty sleeping and more.

It is strongly recommended that you call your physician if you show any abnormal symptoms in the days following a car accident; although, it is preferred that you get a checkup immediately after an accident so you can stop any unknown injuries before they get worse.

Why Do These Injuries Take So Long to Show Up?

Adrenaline and endorphins are a huge reason why injuries can go unnoticed immediately following a car accident. This is because both of these chemical responses can dull pain. A car accident can increase these chemical reactions, but when they wear off, you may start feeling physical pain from the crash.
